Taubensee
Located in the middle of the Chiemgau Alps, the Taubensee is one of the highest mountain lakes in Germany.
It is one of the highest mountain lakes in Germany: the picturesque Taubensee at an altitude of 1,140 meters. In the middle of the Chiemgau Alps, the mountain lake with its diverse shores invites you to take a relaxing break while hiking or on a sporty mountain bike tour. In summer, the lake, with water temperatures of up to 24 degrees, is also ideal for a refreshing dip in the cool water.
The Taubensee does not owe its name to the flying pigeons, but to stone crayfish – called “Daubben” in Bavarian – which are native to the lake alongside numerous species of fish, frogs and mussels. The crayfish can only live in the lake because of the excellent water quality. The Taubensee has no large inflows and no outflow, but is filled by surface water and melting snow. Its dark blue color and oval shape have also earned the Taubensee the nickname “Eye of the Chiemgau”. The border between Bavaria and Tyrol also runs right through the middle of the lake, which is up to 40 meters deep.
Anglers with a valid fishing license and a fishing permit can cast their hooks in the Taubensee at their leisure and, with a little luck, pull one or two fish out of the water in front of the fantastic backdrop.
Hike to Taubensee
From the Achental, wonderful hikes lead over lush alpine meadows and through shady mountain forests up to the idyllic Taubensee. You can either hike to the quiet mountain lake from Hinterwössen via the Luftboden and Kroatensteig or from Schleching via the Chiemhauser Alm. The Taubensee is also a great hiking destination in the Chiemgau Alps from Kössen in Tyrol or Reit im Winkl. In addition to the Taubenseehütte, which is around a five-minute walk from the lake, various surrounding alpine pastures, such as the Stoibenmöseralm or the Chiemhauser Alm, invite you to stop off for a delicious break.
